Utility Tips
Take advantage of discounts for paying by direct debit or within a certain time. But just because the money’s leaving your account automatically, don’t stop checking the bills to ensure they’re correct.

Shop around for the best deals. There’s now plenty of competition to supply your gas and electricity, so contact several suppliers and use last year’s bills to work out what you could save with each company. Keep checking each year - company pricing policies can change.

Gas and Electricity Deregulation

During June 1998 the British Government deregulated the Gas industry, all mains gas customers anywhere in the UK were able to purchase gas from any number of suppliers. That brought real choice to consumers in the domestic and small business markets.

Also in 1998, the Electricity industry was deregulated, giving us the choice to buy electricity from a variety of sources. This will eventually drive down prices as companies compete for customers.

Energy Suppliers Price Rises

Tips to beat the price rises

Here are some quick tips on how to beat the price rises.
1. Change how you pay
Direct Debit is not only easy to set up but also cheaper - many suppliers offer a further discount if you pay this way.
2. Go dual
Consider switching to a dual fuel plan with a supplier under which you get both your electricity and gas from the same company. Not only can you benefit from just one bill, but dual fuel plans can offer a bigger discount.
Look for the best dual fuel plan for you.
3. Fix your price
Fixed or tracker plans offer a fixed or capped price for a period of time (usually 18 months to two years). The plan will cost a little more per unit than a regular deal but if prices continue to rise you'll be unaffected because you've locked in a fixed price. The result could be that you end up paying less than others once a price rise or two have taken effect.
Look for a fixed price plan.
